Finland is a superpower of viking swords!
More than 400 swords from the Viking era have been found in Finland. More are found each year, thanks to metal detecting enthusiasts and digs. Most swords have been found in Pirkanmaa in Tavastia Proper, as well as Southwest Finland and Satakunta regions.
ULFBERHT swords are swords from the 10th to 11th centuries, skillfully made of top-quality cast steel, which were used especially by the Vikings. In the Viking Age, the valuable ULFBERHT sword reflected the high socioeconomic status of its bearer or owner.
Most ULFBERHT swords have been found in Norway (44 items) and the second most in Finland (31 items). A total of 96 swords have been found in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Great Britain and Germany. The map shows in red the locations where ULFBERHT swords have been found.
